It’s not laziness, and it’s not moral failing. It’s your chronotype—the natural preference your internal master clock has for when you should sleep and when you should be alert. And thanks to decades of sleep science, we now know that being a morning person or a night person is largely written into your genes. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck forever, but it does mean you can stop feeling guilty about when your brain decides to rev its engine.

Your internal master clock, called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, sits deep in your brain and runs on a roughly 24-hour cycle. It tells your body when to release melatonin, when to lower your core temperature, and when to spike your alertness. But not everyone’s clock runs on exactly the same schedule. Some people’s clocks run a bit fast, pushing them toward early wake-ups and early bedtimes. Others run slow, making 11 p.m. feel like 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. feel like the middle of the night. That variation is your chronotype, and it exists on a spectrum. About 40 percent of people are true larks or owls, while the rest fall somewhere in between—the classic “hummingbirds” who can adapt either way, though not always happily.

Genetics play a huge role here. Researchers have identified specific gene variants, like the PER3 gene, that influence whether you’re a lark or an owl. These genes affect the speed and amplitude of your circadian rhythm. If you’re a night owl, your melatonin release might peak later, your body temperature nadir might happen closer to morning, and your cognitive performance may naturally crest in the evening. This isn’t rebellion; it’s biology. In fact, some evolutionary scientists think having a mix of chronotypes within a group was protective—someone was always awake to spot a predator or keep the fire going.

But here’s the rub: modern society runs on lark time. Schools start early. Offices want people at desks by eight or nine. The world’s clock rewards the early riser, even though the night owl’s brain is often just getting warmed up when the lark is hitting their afternoon slump. This mismatch is called “social jet lag,” and it’s more than just an annoyance. When you’re forced to wake up before your internal clock wants you to, your body feels like it’s in a different time zone. Over time, that chronic misalignment can raise your risk for metabolic problems, mood issues, and poor sleep quality. It’s not that night owls are unhealthy—it’s that they’re forced to live against their natural rhythm, which takes a toll.

The good news is that your chronotype isn’t entirely destiny. You can nudge your master clock with light, activity, and consistency. Morning light is the strongest signal to push your clock earlier. If you’re an owl trying to become more of a lark, try getting bright sunlight in your eyes within the first hour of waking—even if it’s just standing by a window while you drink coffee. Dimming lights in the evening and avoiding bright screens an hour before bed can also help. On the flip side, if you’re an early bird who wants to stay up for social events, bright light in the evening and a later bedtime can gradually shift you later.

What shouldn’t happen is trying to force a rigid schedule that completely ignores your biology. Instead, aim to work with your chronotype as much as your life allows. If you’re an owl, negotiate a later start time or handle creative, complex tasks in the afternoon and evening when your brain is naturally sharper. If you’re a lark, schedule important meetings early and protect your evenings for winding down. And everyone, regardless of type, benefits from keeping a regular sleep schedule—even on weekends. That consistency anchors your master clock and makes it easier to fall asleep and wake up feeling restored.

Understanding your chronotype changes the conversation from “I’m just not a morning person” to “My internal clock is wired differently, and here’s how I can honor that while still meeting my responsibilities.” It takes self-compassion and a little experimentation. But when you start aligning your daily rhythms with your natural tendencies, sleep becomes less of a struggle and more of a reliable partner. And that’s something both larks and owls can appreciate—even if one of them is doing it at 5 a.m. and the other at 11 p.m.
