Your muscles are just beginning to relax, and your airway remains fairly open. That’s why many snores are soft and occasional early in the night. As you fall into deep sleep, your body fully relaxes, including the soft tissues at the back of your throat. That relaxation narrows your airway, causing more resistance when you breathe. The result? Louder, more consistent snoring. Then, during REM sleep, your brain becomes very active but your body stays in a state of temporary paralysis. That muscle atonia can make snoring even more pronounced. This can cause snoring to start out light and gradually become more labored. On the other hand, if you use a nasal strip or decongestant, you might see the opposite effect – clearer breathing early in the night and more obstruction later. Alcohol and certain medications are well-known snoring amplifiers. Even that one glass of wine with dinner can relax your throat muscles more than usual. This often leads to snoring that begins soon after you fall asleep and continues at a higher volume than your normal baseline. Comparing a recording from a night you didn’t drink with one from a night you did can be a real eye-opener. Similarly, sleeping pills and muscle relaxants have the same effect.

Your weight and overall health play a long-term role, but even within a single night, changes in blood flow and fluid distribution matter. For many people, snoring gets louder toward the morning because fluid that has pooled in the legs during the day redistributes to the neck and upper airway when you lie down. This is a common reason why early-morning snoring often sounds wetter or more forceful.

Perhaps the most important thing your overnight audio recordings can reveal is the difference between occasional, harmless snoring and the interrupted breathing patterns of sleep apnea. If you listen closely, you might notice that your snoring stops completely for a few seconds, followed by a sudden gasp or snort. That pattern is a warning sign. Other red flags include very irregular pacing, a gradually increasing intensity that never settles, or snoring that sounds like you’re struggling for air. If you hear any of these, it’s worth bringing your recordings to your doctor. They can help you determine whether you need a sleep study.

The good news is that by recording your sleep audio on a regular basis, you can build a personal nighttime soundtrack that helps you understand your body’s unique rhythms.
