That means if you lie down for eight hours, you should be asleep for at least six hours and forty-eight minutes. The rest of that time accounts for the natural transitions between sleep stages and brief awakenings that happen every night. When your efficiency drops below that threshold, it is a clear signal that something is interfering with your ability to stay asleep or fall asleep quickly. The good news is that monitoring your sleep efficiency is straightforward, and with a little attention, you can learn exactly what needs to change.

The first step to understanding your sleep efficiency is knowing how to measure it. You do not need a lab full of scientists or a pricey polysomnography machine. A simple sleep diary can give you a rough idea. Each morning, write down what time you got into bed, what time you turned off the lights, and what time you eventually got up. Estimate how long it took you to fall asleep and how many times you woke up during the night. Divide your total estimated sleep time by your total time in bed, multiply by one hundred, and there is your efficiency. Doing this for a week will show you patterns you might have missed, like the fact that you spend an hour scrolling your phone before actually closing your eyes, which drags your efficiency down.

For a more accurate picture, a wearable device can be a real game-changer. Smartwatches and fitness trackers from brands like Fitbit, Apple, Garmin, and Oura use a combination of heart rate variability, movement detection, and sometimes even blood oxygen levels to estimate when you are asleep and when you are awake. They are not perfect—no consumer device matches a clinical sleep study—but they are remarkably good at tracking the big trends. When you look at your sleep efficiency score in your device’s app, pay attention to the times when it dips below 85 percent. Did you have caffeine after dinner? Did you drink alcohol? Were you stressed about a work presentation? Over time, you will notice that sleep efficiency is not random; it responds directly to your choices.

One of the most useful ways to monitor your sleep efficiency is to look at your sleep latency, which is the time it takes you to fall asleep after your head hits the pillow. Healthy sleep latency is generally between ten and twenty minutes. If you fall asleep in under five minutes, that can actually be a sign of severe sleep deprivation. If it takes you more than thirty minutes, your sleep efficiency will suffer because those minutes count as time in bed but not time asleep. The same logic applies to wake after sleep onset, or WASO. These are the periods when you wake up in the middle of the night and struggle to get back to sleep. A small amount of WASO is normal, but if you are awake for more than twenty to thirty minutes total across the night, your efficiency will drop noticeably.

Once you have a few weeks of data, you can start interpreting your scores in a way that leads to real improvement. If your sleep efficiency is consistently above 85 percent, you are in a good place. Your sleep is likely restorative, and your body is getting the deep and REM sleep it needs. If your efficiency is hovering between 80 and 85 percent, you might benefit from tightening up your sleep hygiene. Try going to bed only when you are truly sleepy, and consider limiting your total time in bed to your actual sleep need. That might mean sleeping seven hours instead of nine, which paradoxically can improve your efficiency and make you feel more rested. If your efficiency is regularly below 80 percent, it might be time to talk to a doctor about sleep disorders like insomnia or sleep apnea, which can fragment your sleep without you even realizing it.

Remember that sleep efficiency is a tool, not a test score you need to ace every single night. Life happens. A late dinner with friends, a sick child, or a stressful deadline will push your numbers down. That is okay. The goal is to monitor your sleep efficiency over the long term so you can spot trends and make small adjustments.
