But not all metrics are created equal, and tracking the wrong ones can leave you more anxious than rested. Here’s a straightforward guide to interpreting your sleep scores so you can stop obsessing over the data and start sleeping better.

First, let’s talk about total sleep time. This is the most basic metric, but it’s also the most easily misunderstood. Many people focus on the time they go to bed and the time they wake up, subtracting the minutes they spent tossing and turning. That’s a good start, but what matters more is your actual sleep duration—the amount of time you spend in a sleeping state, not just lying in bed. If your wearable reports seven and a half hours of sleep, but you felt groggy all day, the issue isn’t the number itself. It’s the quality of those hours. A better approach is to track your sleep efficiency, which is the percentage of time in bed that you’re actually asleep. Anything above eighty-five percent is considered healthy. If you’re below that, your bed might be a place for worrying, not resting. Try adjusting your pre-sleep routine or your mattress to improve that ratio before you chase more minutes.

Next, consider your deep sleep and REM sleep. These two stages are where the real recovery happens. Deep sleep is when your body repairs muscle tissue, strengthens your immune system, and clears out waste from your brain. REM sleep is when your brain processes emotions and consolidates memories. Most wearables break down your night into these stages, but the percentages can vary wildly from person to person. Instead of aiming for a specific number—like twenty percent deep sleep—look for consistency. If you normally get ninety minutes of deep sleep but suddenly drop to forty, something is interfering. It could be alcohol, stress, or a room temperature that is too warm. The metric that truly matters here is the trend over a week, not a single night. If your deep sleep is consistently low, that’s a sign to examine your evening habits or your pillow support.

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is another recovery metric that gets a lot of attention, and for good reason. HRV measures the variation in time between your heartbeats. A higher HRV generally indicates your nervous system is in a relaxed, recovery-friendly state, while a lower HRV suggests stress or overtraining. But here is the catch: HRV is highly individual. What is high for you might be low for someone else. The number on its own is useless. What matters is your personal baseline. If your HRV dips below your usual range after a night of poor sleep, that is a clear signal to prioritize recovery the next day. Do not compare your HRV to a friend’s, and do not panic if it fluctuates. Instead, use it as a simple traffic light: green means you are recovering well, yellow means go easy, and red means you need to rest.

Respiratory rate is a quieter metric, but it tells a powerful story. Your breathing rate while asleep typically sits between twelve and twenty breaths per minute. If you see a rising trend over several nights, it could indicate allergies, a developing illness, or even sleep-disordered breathing like sleep apnea. Many wearables now track this automatically. Pay attention to sudden spikes that correspond with poor sleep quality. If your respiratory rate stays high for more than a few nights, it might be worth discussing with a doctor. This metric is less about perfect scores and more about spotting patterns that you cannot feel on your own.

Finally, do not overlook how you feel. The best wearable is the one that matches your subjective experience. If your sleep scores look perfect but you wake up tired, trust your body over the device. Recovery is not just data; it is how your energy, mood, and focus behave during the day. Use your sleep scores as clues, not commands. Track your time in bed, deep sleep consistency, HRV trends, and respiratory changes. Let them guide you toward better habits, like upgrading your cooling sheets or adjusting your bedtime. Stop chasing the perfect number. Start chasing the morning when you wake up and actually feel restored.
